Fire Truck Cake

Image
This is the cake I made for my son's 5th birthday, which happened over Christmas break while we were out of town. I knew I was going to be making it at my in-law's house, so I brought some of my baking "tools" along with me and just bought the groceries there. It was a surprise for him! He loved it. I'm fairly happy with the way it turned out, considering I didn't have much time to make it, I baked it and covered it New Year's Eve before we went out, and then finished it in the am. I got 5 hours of sleep, got up at 7:30, finished the cake by 9, then we left so I could run a last minute race (we went into a running store the day before so I could get a shirt, and I walked out signed up for a New Years Day race at 10 am. I'm crazy like that!). I ran the race (and had a record time despite the temp being 32 degrees and me wearing shorts!), came home and had 20 minutes to shower and get ready to leave for the party! Hectic! Also: An update on my Tour of t...

Tour of the Big XII cake series

In case anyone has been wondering, I've temporarily put this project on hold. Ever since I got a little behind a few weeks ago, the Aggies have started winning. Against good teams. So, in true sports-fan fashion, out of superstition, I won't be posting any more until we lose or the season's over!! Gig em and Beat the Hell Outta Nebraska!! WHOOP!!!!!!!!!

Tour of the Big XII cake series, Week 8 (Kansas)

Image
Yall didn't think just because I'M IN HAWAII RIGHT NOW that I would skip this week! No Way! This week is Kansas! Ok, not much chatter for today, I'm gonna go have another mai tai!

Tour of the Big XII cake series, Week 7 (Missouri)

Image
This week the Aggies play Missouri. This logo is the last of the hard ones I think! God bless the easy schools with just big letters (N, OU, TT, BU, UT). I couldn't decide whether I was gonna put this guy on the white background or not because he has so much white on him.

Tour of the Big XII cake series, Week 6 (Iowa State)

Image
This week the Aggies take on Arkansas State in the new Cowboys stadium, so I'm taking the chance to do another team in the Big XII that we aren't playing this year: Iowa State. Again, with the hard logos!! On this one I had to use the "Rule of Oklahoma State", where I have to eliminate some of the microscopic lettering. Under "State", it says "cyclones". The scale of these logos is about 5 inches, so it's hard enough to cut out even normal sized letters! This guy also had tons of blue swirly things all around him, I'm guessing to indicate movement?, that I just couldn't do with fondant. Maybe sometime I could try those food-marker things again, I never had any luck with them before. post note: I've been lovingly reminded by my husband that we are playing ARKANSAS, not Arkansas State. Bah. Same thing .

Tour of the Big XII cake series, Week 5 (OSU)

Image
Well, here's the OSU logo I should've done last week, but was too busy and needed to save my black fondant for the zebra cake! I decided to go ahead and do the logo that's on the Big XII logo, but I had to take a little bit of "artistic licence" and left out the lettering above the "State" (Oklahoma) and below it (University). Those letters are teeeeeny tiny and there was NO WAY I was going to be able to cut them out of fondant. So sue me! I also didn't put this one on a cake, because we have more than a few cupcakes around here and I just didn't have it in me to make another cake. So, you get logo a la carte!

Tour of the Big XII cake series, Week 4 (Kansas State)

Image
This weekend the Aggies are off, and we have a Thursday game next week. On the "off" weekends or days we play non-conference games gives me a chance to do the logos of the teams we aren't playing this year (like last week). This week is Kansas State!

Tour of the Big XII cake series, Week 3 (Colorado)

Image
This week on the Tour of the Big XII is University of Colorado. I know, they may be leaving the conference soon, but they're still in it now! The Aggies play Florida International or something. It's not on tv. Shocking. At least the Cowboys game is on...oh wait...it's blacked out for the Titans game. Whatev. Looks like we will be packing up the fam and heading to our local wing establishment to try to see at least some of it.

Tour of the Big XII cake series, Week 2 (bye) (Dallas Cowboys)

Image
This week is a "bye" on the Tour of the Big XII Cake Series. (Hey, I'm makin the schedule!) But I just wanted to post this graphic, which contains the logos I will (hopefully) be making. Since several schools have more than one logo, I figured these are the most "official" ones! Anyhoodles, since this week is a bye and coincidentially the opening week of pro football, I decided I'd make the Cowboys logo. This one didn't turn out that good because I totally did it in a hurry and didn't get a chance to get it up here because I was so busy with the other cake! But I did get it done before the game, not that it helped them any.....sheesh. Oh, by the way, the Aggies did win our game against Louisiana Tech, 48-16. WHOOP! 2-0!

Tour of the Big XII: Are You Ready For Some Football??? (Texas A&M)

Image
Yippeeeee!! It's finally here!! College Football!! It's about time, already. Sheesh. We are always so ready for football come August. I'm planning tons of food for tomorrow for our big celebration for...well...us. Gig'em! This year, for some reason, I decided I was going to do a "Tour of the Big XII". choo choo!!!! (honestly, one of my twitter buddies in FL recently made a cake with the the Florida Gators logo on it out of fondant and that's what got me cookin on it!!) Each week, I'm going to rotate through all (yes, all ) the schools' logos. I may even fit in a couple pro logos in too if I have time. The cakes are going to be pretty small, just a single layer 6" round. That way I don't bake my way into the poor house and also we don't all weigh 500 lbs come December. Some I'll keep, and some I'll send to work with my husband. (Yall aren't gettin this one, sorry!!) I'm doing it mostly to practice doing different designs...
